Packing List - Winter X-Games / Aspen

So stoked to be here in Aspen on a photo shoot during the X-Games. But packing for a 9 day adventure that includes; shooting at night, snowboarding in the backcountry and hitting the X-Games, as well as hanging out at The Vice Roy Hotel, having late night cocktails at 39 Degree's bar and eating at the upscale restaurant, "Cash Cash", is always difficult. Damn those airlines and their 50lbs per bag limit!

My go to solution is to always do a "color story" to make packing and getting dressed from day to night a little bit easier. This time I am sticking with warm (and furry) pieces in amazing shades of brown, taupe and gold. The gold was a no brainer, I have so many athletes I am rooting for to get gold at Winter X it just seemed right.

Notes: Sorel Boots have now become a fashion statement in colder climates, Oakley Goggles are sharp in the gold color way, & look great on the mountain or when riding to location on a snowmobile. And I totally had to throw in the Alexander McQueen scarf and the CC Skye bracelet because duh, it's Aspen!

Happy Monday! I'm off to Aspen and the X-Games today to do a 9 day shoot with some rad snowboarders and skiers. If I have any down time I plan on meeting up with friends to see the women's 1/2 pipe competition (Go Gretchen Bleiler!) and since we get to shoot in the back country for 2 days, maybe I will get lucky and get some boarding in myself. Praying for bluebird skies...

Rebel Girl With A Cause

At age 13, Laura Dekker said she wanted to solo sail around the world. When Dutch authorities tried to stop her, she ran away at age 14 to pursue her dream. Authorities found her in St. Maarten trying to buy a boat and took her away. Five long court battles later, along with the promise of getting a a bigger boat, and to do correspondence schooling, she was allowed to set sail.

Sixteen years old & 27,000 nautical miles later, Laura and her 38ft boat, Guppy, sailed into the port in St. Maarten yestrerday to set the record for the youngest person to solo sail around the world.

I was stoked when Zach Sunderland did his solo sail around the world and I made sure I was in Marina del Rey when he arrived home from his voyage (at the time he was the youngest person to do so). Ian went to see his sister Abby off on her RTW sailing trip. And I watched, along with everyone else in the world, when she was rescued when her boat capsized after it was hit by large waves, in the Indian Ocean.

And now I am cheering for Laura and her amazing accomplishment.

So damn cool that young people are doing something extraordinary that they love instead of hanging out at the mall...

I met the coolest girl, Szilvia, on one of my shoots a few months back. She is a world class scuba diver, adventure show host, stunt woman and it turns out that she also creates this beautiful jewelry that is as inspirational as it is rad. Awesome sayings like "Do one thing that scares you every day and "Never, never, never give up" on sterling silver "dog tag" style pieces are so up my alley.

I plan on having every male and female athlete I know wearing one in no time.

Made it over to the "Life is Beautiful" art show by well known street artist, Thierry Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash today. If you saw Banksy's "Exit Through the Gift Shop" then you know who Mr. Brainwash is. This show was 80,000 square feet of pure street art and I left there totally inspired. In fact I could go back again as I am sure I missed a ton of stuff - there was cool art everywhere.

And yes, that is a very blurry picture of me with Mr. Brainwash. Stoked to have met him - he was there for a nano second and I grabbed him to chat. Did you really think I wouldn't?

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Collection by Trish Summerville

Not sure how I missed the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo launch at H&M last week. I know I have been busy on shoots for the past 6 weeks, but really?? So unlike me... Anyway, I am loving this whole collection, from the earrings down to the boots & sneakers, it's all super rad. Reminds me of Rick Owens meets Raquel Allegra, and there is nothing wrong with that mix. The good news is I was able to score a couple tee's this morning at my local H&M but then had to resort to E-Bay to get some of the other pieces I wanted. That's what happens when you are not paying attention...

California Style

Gotta love Christina's laid back, cool girl, California style. She works with me when I come down to San Diego on shoots and she never fails to inspire me with her awesome mix of apparel, accessories and shoes.

We were shooting on a golf course so we had to wear sneakers, khaki's and shirts with collars - this is her take on that look and I love it! From the striped, velvety Zara coat, (forget it girls, she got it in Italy!) to the Current/Elliott cropped pants, all the way down to the Burberry slip-on's, and then the awesome tangled "surfer girl" hair, she is one rad chick.

She also designs clothes - so as soon as she whips up some new stuff I will let you know. One of my friends and I already have standing orders for a coat just like that one!

After a very rainy Sunday morning here in LA the sun came out just in time to buzz over to the Dosa x Alice Waters party, benefiting Alice's "Edible Schoolyard Project", in downtown LA. Always a fun party, great food (when the menu is prepared by renowned chef, Alice Waters, how could it not be?), interesting people, beautiful Dosa clothing by Christina Kim, and a spectacular setting.

Dork Moment #1: asking Alice if she would mind speaking to my friend (via my cell phone) who is a huge foodie, but could not be there. Yeah I know, highly embarrassing but he loved it!

Bobbing for apples (how gross was that??), knowing which houses gave the best treats year after year (like the full size Hershey bars or bags of pennies) and watching the sky for the first tell tale signs of sunset so you could get out there?

Yeah, Halloween is a great time to be a kid. Or in my case, at least act like one!

This new Tokidoki Barbie is pretty cool. I used to work at Mattel Toys, in the photo department when I first started in this business, and Barbie was never this hip. This version has pink hair, tattoos, skulls, and her prickely pet "Bastardino" by her side. How they got that name passed through at Mattel is beyond me! LOL

“I first met Cindy Whitehead in the late 1970's at an L.A. skatepark, Marina Del Rey or Skatercross, I believe. She was decked out in the latest Sims Team outfit and putting her moves out there along the boys that she was busy jockeying for a drop-in into the bowl. Those that were there know what I'm talking about- a group of A-pesonality kids jacked up on sugar, surfing, skating and other things all trying to get a run before the next dude or girl, which was either Cindy or Vicki Vickers. Cindy would get her fare share of fun only by trash talking the bro's (which she's still quite good at!) then dropping in while their heads turned in puzzling astonishment. In the Dogtown days of yore one had to cut some pretty sharp teeth to be included into the pack and Cindy's were quite razorlike when necessary.

She was the token female on the LA team, aside from Edie Robertson in Santa Barbara and held her own in many locations. I have remained friends and in touch with her after skateboarding as we both went into the fashion industry to seek out new horizons and careers. She is still one of the top wardrobe stylists going and is always on the move, job after job. We've shared many laughs over our 30+ year friendship and I don't expect it to slow or stop anytime soon. She was a great skater, is a great stylist and a true friend whose shooting star trajectory has paralleled my own for years. Life is a trip and mine has certainly been enhanced by Cindy's friendship.”

So damn stoked to end my week with this! "I Skate Therefore I Am" posted this interview with me today, as part of it's Girls Appreciation Month. I may piss off the boys with some of my "pro girl" comments, but what else is new? Just remember - "Girls rule the pool". Ha!

Went to the W Hotel in Hollywood last Thursday to hear Richie Sambora and Kimberly Caldwell perform & see the White Trash Beautiful fashion show Had some amazing drink they were serving (see photo near top of post) it was obviously good as I took a bunch of abstract snaps of my outfit (see next photo after vodka pix), which I never do. In case you are wondering.. I was wearing a Thomas Wylde top, Haute Hippie vest, & The Row leather leggings. I have to say that the people watching was amazing - everythig from Dallas big hair looks, to playboy girls, to edgy rockers girls, to guys in top hats - all & all it was a pretty fun evening.

Oh yeah - did I mention I did drive thru and got Chick-Fil-a before we valeted the car? Yeah I am fancy like that. LOL

As you guys know, I designed a skateboard "GIRL is NOT a 4 Letter Word" for the awesome non-profit BOARD RESCUE. My board, along with all the other pro skaters who designed boards this year, are now up for auction via Ebay.

Yeah I know, there are male athletes featured nude in ESPN Magazine's "The Body Issue" but since I gave you enough to drool over with that Clay Matthews cover a few weeks ago I want to talk about the girls.

I totally feel like Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush when she is asked what she wants in life and she says "I'd like to see a girl on the cover of Surfer Mag...". That pretty much sums it up for me. I am stoked anytime I see a kick ass female athlete on the cover of any sports magazine and this time around TWO women were featured on covers (they did 4 different covers for this issue), Hope Solo and Gretchen Bleiler. Not too mention all the other rad women featured inside the magazine.

I hope you love the photos of these strong, confident, bad-ass girls as much as I do.

Stumbled upon Garage Company, the coolest motorcycle shop ever, this past weekend. I seriously could have hung out there all day shooting pix of cool old motorcycles, vintage helmets and other rad stuff. As most of you know I have a Vespa, but after hanging out here and talking to the owner Yoshi and his crew, I am thinking I need a vintage motorcycle! We did end up getting a sweet vintage style helmet for Ian. And I still have my eye on the Ruby Pavillion helmets they have in there... I am in love with this place.

I was out in Greensboro, Georgia all last week styling pro golfers, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Natalie Gulbis, Paula Creamer & Jessica Corda for a big TaylorMade/Adidas golf shoot. It's a rad crew of people I have had the pleasure of working with for almost 14 years now!

We always have an amazing time - we work hard and play hard, and Georgia is absoluetly beautiful (but so humid!) this time of year. The 3 of us girls - Renee, who does hair & make-up, myself and Stefanie, my LA assistant stay in a house by the lake & we have the best time hanging out together at night after the shoot day is done.

We experienced everything from a lightning & hail storm (so weird when it's that hot!), to fried macaroni & cheese at lunch, to learning that if you say "bless her heart" it really means something negative (like "what an idiot"), that you have to buy liquor at a state liquor store (not the grocery store like in LA) and that they are closed on Sundays, that southern hospitality is alive and well and gentlemen always open doors for the ladies. Gotta love the south!

I know it's only Friday, but since I have had back to back shoots and been gone this past week on location, I am taking Friday off and doing absolutely nothing. A rare event for me - but "ditching" reminds me of high school and I am kinda loving it.
